Program Summary:
Welcome to Winick Whacksketball, the official sport of Rabbi Isaac Winick #420! We not only introduced the freshman and AITs of our chapter to this great sport, but we incorporated team building skills to create a stronger bond.
Full Description:
The members and upcoming AITS of Rabbi Isaac Winick got together at the local Jewish Community Center to be introduced to the sport of our chapter. We had 13 members present along with four AITs. This sport has been played in Winick for over 25 years. First the members and AITs were split into two even teams. We needed a regulation length basketball court with the goals lowered to seven feet. Also, we needed colored helmets to indicate the different positions on the court and two whiffle ball bats for the goalies. Also two different sized dodgeballs were used to gain points, but both were in play simultaneously. Depending on which ball scored, different amounts of points were awarded to teams. we decided to teach our members this sport because we noticed that there was a lack of knowledge of Winick's history. Winick Whacksketball was planned very easily and quickly and had a great turn out and will now become a frequent event played and enjoyed after business meetings.
Whacksketball Rules
Equipment-
- 1 basketball court with key and 3-point line
- 2 basketball goals set at a very low height (preferably 7.5 feet)
- One large soft ball around the size of a basketball
- One small soft ball significantly smaller than the first
- 2 non-metal baseball bats of equal size (Whiffleball bats)
- Helmets (a different color for each position) or other marking (2 colors) to denote player positions.
Positions (each team)-
1) 1 goalie that may use a baseball bat at his discretion. This player may throw the ball at all positions of the court while the bat is in his hand. This player will not need a unique marking, as the bat will serve as identification. This player may strip the ball from any opposing player in the key as long as the bat is in his hand.
2) 2 defense-anators who may throw the ball only in their own key; all other ball movement must be rolling. These players will have a unique marking to distinguish themselves. These players may only shoot inside the 3-point line. This player may never strip the ball from another player.
3) 1 offense-anator who may throw the ball at any part of the court. This player will have a unique marking. This player may never strip the ball from another player.
4) The remaining players will be regular players. These players must roll the ball from all spots of the court. These players may only shoot inside the 3-point line. This player may never strip the ball from another player.
*No player may move with the ball
**Assign positions for each team in this order
1 goalie
1 offense-anator
2 defense-anators
Everyone else
SCORING: Small Ball: 1 point for each basket
Larger Ball: 3 points for each basket
STARTING: the team who has a regular player spin in a circle 3 times the fastest earns possession of both balls.
WINNING: the game ends when one team reaches a predetermined point value or a predetermined time has been reached with one team in the lead.
WHACKSKETBALL: a whacksketball occurs when any player at any spot on the court has possession of both balls at the same time. THIS IS NOT OPTIONAL! If one player ever has both balls, a whacksketball must occur. Everyone, except the person with the balls, spins in place. If a spinning player is within arm length of the ball holder, he must move away. The shooter then shoots both balls. Once the second ball touches the ground, play resumes. Scoring is normal during a whacksketball.
PENALTIES: 1) A 30 second penalty occurs for a minor penalty such as incidental contact at the discretion of both players in the game. The keeping of the penalty time is a responsibility of the player who committed the infraction and is observed off the court.
2) A 2-minute penalty occurs for a major infraction such as tackling or pushing in the back. This penalty is observed off the court and counted by the player at fault.
Submitter's Suggestions:
Make it fun! Don't make it all about instructions and what-not.
