    Program Summary:

A six fold program on the Holocaust in honor of Yom HaShoah.

    Full Description:

For the first part of the program, our N’siah, Leanna, and I handed out 3 slips of paper and a marker to each girl. On one slip, each girl was to write down the names of her family and friends. On another, each girl was to write down everything that she’d accomplished, and on the third slip, she was to write down everything that they hoped for the future. Leanna and I took turns reading a short speech about the Holocaust, which included two personal testimonies. At the appropriate times (see script), we had the girls rip up their sheets of paper. Once we were done with that portion of the night, we placed all the ripped sheets of paper in an aluminum pan and burned them in the fire place. For the next part of the night, we created shrinky dinks that depicted our hopes and dreams for the future. This took about 30 minutes. Once we cleaned up the shrinky dinks, we moved onto another art project. We created butterflies which I submitted to our Holocaust Museum for their “Butterfly Project”, which was inspired by “I Never Saw Another Butterfly: Children’s Drawings and Poems from Terezin Concentration Camp 1942–1944”. For the sisterhood portion of the night, we all created hair gel candles. In order to make the candles, you must pour thick, clear hair gel into a glass container (typically, votive candle holders are the perfect size) which can be purchased from the dollar store. We gave each girl a set of beads. They were to place in their hair gel a bead to represent different things (such as a friend lost, a friend made, a friend you would like to make up with, someone you miss, someone you want to get closer to, etc.). Once we were done placing beads into the jar, each girl could pick a glitter color to put in the gel. The glitter represented different things (gold glitter represented happiness, silver represented luck, blue represented friendship, etc.). Then, we melted colored crayons over the hair gel in order to seal of the candles.

    Submitter's Suggestions:

Designate different spaces for the art projects and give the girls a set amount of time for each activity because girls can spend a long time on just one art project.
