Program Summary:
A program that is done in secret at first and then the eye opening results of how much food we waste is revealed to the region
Full Description:
HOW MUCH DO WE WASTE
Supplies needed: Scale, markers, poster board
(or make the graph on a computer and use a projector to show it)
Program:
After every meal, steerers need to take time to weigh the garbage that is thrown out. The plates and cups can either be included as collateral OR weighed before the meal. The plates and cups aren’t important in the overall scheme and the point will still be made regardless of the inclusion of the plates.
The weights of the wasted food need to be weighed and recorded. Then graph each meal on the poster board using markers.
On Saturday before Dinner (or after lunch), Show the graph of wasted food for the first three meals of convention and tell the participants that you will be continuing to weigh for the last three meals. Hopefully, after the revelation of how much is wasted at each meals the number will decrease by the last meal of the weekend.
Script:
Person one: At every meal we take so much food that we don’t eat. Have you ever noticed at a convention how much food you throw away without eating? Did you ever stop to think that there are people who would never have the chance to waste food?
Person Two: At every meal we have been weighing the food that is thrown away to give you an idea of how wasteful we can be. (show the chart thing). This is what its been like for the past three meals of convention
Person One: Now that you are aware of this- see if you can make a change in your habits. Take only a little and go back for seconds rather than piling food on your plate and throwing half of it out. Let’s try and reduce these numbers for the last three meals of convention.
