Program Summary:
Are you tired of the same shabbat services every weekend? That was rhetorical; Of course you are. This service is a fun musical informative service all about your heart because February is National Heart Awareness Month!
Full Description:
Chalom BBG along with Leviticeem BBG teamed up to do a Friday night event about Hearts because February is Heart Awareness Month.
We started off the night going to build-a-bear. Everyone was paired with a 'big' or 'little' sister to defer costs so everyone ended up paying around $10 each. We donated the bears to St. Christopher's Cardiac Center (a children's hospital).
We came back to the house to an array of healthy snacks that are good for your heart.
Then, to spice up the night, we created musical, heart themed services. (Scroll down). We just had everyone sit in a circle and gave out prayer and song packets.
We used a guitar to play along, but it would be just as fun without!
Friday Night Hearts Service
February 19, 2010
Rachel: Bruchim havaim le tiffilat Shabbat le va oat.
Jordyn: A heart is a very precious thing.
Rachel: Anyone who lives has one.
Jordyn: But there are a few that are not as lucky as us.
Rachel: Their hearts can’t work alone, or work differently.
Jordyn: In America, over 73,600,000 people have high blood pressure
Rachel: Over 17,600,000 have a coronary heart disease
Jordyn: over 6,400,000 have had a stroke
Rachel: and an estimated 5,800,000 have had heart failure. All in one year.
Jordyn: February is National Heart Awareness Month
Rachel: This month informs everyone how we should love our hearts and take precautions in keeping them healthy.
Jordyn: It also reminds us of how many people suffer because of cardiac problems.
Rachel: Everyone in this room has made a bear with a heart.
Jordyn: These bears are going to St. Christopher’s Hospital to the cardiac center. They will show that not only do we want them to smile, but we care, we are aware of the fact that there are those who’s hearts aren’t as healthy as ours.
Rachel: Lets begin with L’cha Dodi.
(Sing L’cha Dodi)
Jordyn: Julia's completely preoccupied with the wedding. She doesn't know what's going on.
Rachel: Yeah, but you know what sucks though? Once you get married, the party's over, right?
Jordyn: No, L’cha Dodi is the song we use to welcome Shabbat, which is commonly referred to as a bride, and the party never stops.
Rachel: But in the Wedding Singer, there can’t be the ‘perfect’ bride until Robbie proposes to Julia.
Jordyn: Now let’s go back to the 80’s and sing the love song Grow Old with you from the Wedding Singer
I wanna make you smile whenever you're sad
Carry you around when your arthritis is bad
Oh all I wanna do is grow old with you
I'll get your medicine when your tummy aches
Build you a fire if the furnace breaks
Oh it could be so nice, growing old with you
I'll miss you
Kiss you
Give you my coat when you are cold
Need you
Feed you
Even let ya hold the remote control
So let me do the dishes in our kitchen sink
Put you to bed when you've had too much to drink
I could be the man who grows old with you
I wanna grow old with you
Jordyn: Now let’s sing the Bar’chu followed by the sh’ma
(everyone sings bar’chu and shema)
Rachel: Hear, O Israel: the Eternal One is our God, the Eternal God alone.
Jordyn: The V’ahafta states that you should love your Eternal god with all you heart.
Rachel: Love with all of your heart, with all your soul.
Jordyn: This is kind of like loving you parents with all your hear all your soul. This brings us to the jungle, where one of the greatest Disney love is born
Come stop your crying
It will be all right
Just take my hand Hold it tight
I will protect you
from all around you
I will be here
Don't you cry
For one so small,
you seem so strong
My arms will hold you,
keep you safe and warm
This bond between us
Can't be broken
I will be here
Don't you cry
'Cause you'll be in my heart
Yes, you'll be in my heart
From this day on
Now and forever more
You'll be in my heart
No matter what they say
You'll be here in my heart, always
Always
(v’eahavta, hatzi kadish)
Jordyn: Now it is time for the Amidah
Rachel: You may recite it quietly to yourself in either Hebrew or english
Jordyn: You can also take the time to reflect on your past week
Rachel: Or, you can take this moment to think about your heart, what you can do to make it healthier
Jordyn: Or think about the people whose hearts aren’t as healthy as your own, and what you can do to teach others about heart awareness
Rachel: Now take this time and please stay quiet for the amidah.
(amidah)
(aleinu)
Jordyn: Love, is universal, all you need is a heart.
Rachel: all you need is one life
Jordyn: all you need is the power to believe.
Rachel:Now, lets recite the hatzi hadish, to believe and remember the one’s who came before us and to comfort the ones who mourn.
(mourner’s kadish)
525,600 minutes, 525,000 moments so dear. 525,600 minutes - how do you measure,
measure a year? In daylights, in sunsets, in midnights, in cups of coffee. In
inches, in miles, in laughter, in strife. In 525,600 minutes - how do you
measure a year in the life?
How about love? How about love? How about love?
Measure in love. Seasons of love.
525,600 minutes! 525,000 journeys to plan. 525,600 minutes - how can you measure
the life of a woman or man?
In truths that she learned, or in times that he cried. In bridges he burned, or
the way that she died.
It’s time now to sing out, tho the story never ends let's celebrate remember a year in the life of friends. Remember
the love! Remember the love! Remember
the love! Measure in love. Seasons of love! Seasons of love.
(adon alom)
Jordyn: February is Heart Awareness Month.
Rachel: We hope that through this event and service you are more aware of your heart, and heart diseases.
Jordyn: We leave you with knowledge.
Rachel: and hope you join us for our final melody.
A dream is a wish your heart makes
When you're fast asleep
In dreams you lose your heartaches
Whatever you wish for, you keep
Have faith in your dreams and someday
Your rainbow will come smiling through
No matter how your heart is grieving
If you keep on believing
the dream that you wish will come true
