Im Julia and Welcome to Under the Sea Night. Before we start our mixer, lets go around the circle and say our Name, Grade, School, and favorite fish Mixer Now were going to start our mixer. Raise your hand if youve ever played Go Fish before. Basically, its this fun card game where you take turns asking someone in your group if they have a specific card that youre looking for. If they have the card, then you take all of that number from them and ask again until you dont gain anymore cards. That is when your turn ends and you Go Fish. Basically you pick a card from the deck. When you get a group of four, you put your set face side up. Then you must answer the question from the list. If you got a set of eights, answer question number eight etc. First things first, Im going to split you all into groups of two. [Pair up groups to make groups of four] If you could live in any location at any point in hitory, when and where would you most like to live? When was the last time you cried? When are you happiest? What will you be doing in 10 years? Who are your rolemodels? Tell us something about yourself that most people dont know. What are yu proud of? What scares you the most about the world? What makes you feel alive? Jack. Tell Us about your life? Queen. Whats your favorte comfort food? King. Whos your dream date? Whats he like? What does he do? Ace. Describe yourself. Jonah & the Whale Although it is not Yom Kippur, Im going to tell you a story about a Prophet named Jonah. Once upon a time in the far way land of Ancient Biblical Times, there was a Navi (Prophet) named Jonah. G-d told Jonah to go to the city of Nineveh and teach the people there to do Teshuva. Otherwise G-d was going to destroy the city. Jonah did not want to go. After all, he was just a man. And there was not a lot that he could do to stop thousands of people from doing bad deeds. It was their culture, and he was just one man. Jonah did not want to go, and he tried to run away. So, he boarded a boat that was going to Tarshish. As if G-d wouldnt be able to track him down. On the way to Tarshinish, a great storm arose, tossing the ship about. Jonah asked to be thrown overboard as he knew that the storm was because of him. Sure enough, as soon as he was thrown overboard, the storm stopped. When Jonah was thrown into the sea, he was swallowed by a great fish, where he prayed to G-d and was forgiven. On G-ds orders, the fish carried Jonah to shore and he headed towards Nineveh. In Nineveh, Jonah tells the people G-d orders and they listen to Jonah. Even though Jonah thought that he was insignificant and that he couldnt accomplish great deeds, all that was lacking was faith in himself. Now, what we are going to do is play a game called sharks and minnows. But, lets put a little spin on it. Jonahs and the Whales. Im going to choose someone to be the first Whale. The Whale can run around and tag anyone they choose. If you get tagged, you must freeze where you are and try to tag people with your arms. If you are a Jonah you must run from this end to this end when I say run. However, while youre running around you must stay linked with your partner. If you unlink, you will become a frozen whale. Dinner Under the Sea, most everyone eats healthy. Sorry but there are no Chipotle or In and Out. So, were going to follow their lead and eat some Salmon and Salad. Mmm. Havdallah Remember when Ariel was in her cove, looking up at the moon? Well, lets just say that you cant exactly sky gaze 2000 leagues under the sea or whatever. Next time you look up at the sky, be thankful! Haiti Now Im going to strain your brains back to when we were talking about Jonah. Oh, yah. Remember that? In Jonahs case, he didnt believe that he could accomplish the task at hand. Even though G-d had faith in him. So, what we are going to do now is take a bit of Jonahs spirit and use it to deal with a very big problem going on in the world right now. In case you didnt know, Haiti is a beautiful country in the Caribbean. With beautiful beaches, and deep blue waters that seem endless, it is no wonder why so many tourists flock to the beautiful country of Haiti. However, Haiti has not been so lucky. However, on January 12th 2010, a 7.0 Magnitude earthquake struck Haiti. The earthquake left the country in ruin. [Hand out Facts about the earthquake and have different girls read them] USGS: USGS called it the strongest earthquake since 1770 in what is now Haiti The quake struck on January 12, 2010 at 4:53 p.m. The 7.0 magnitude quake's epicenter hit just 10 miles west of Porte-au-Prince and its 2 million inhabitants 3 million people in need of emergency aid after major earthquake The major quake sent 33 aftershocks ranging in magnitude from 4.2 to 5.9 The Red Cross dispatched a relief team from Geneva and the UN's World Food Program is flying in two planes with emergency food aid. The Inter-American Development Bank said it was immediately approving a $200,000 grant for emergency aid. Some 9,000 peacekeepers have been in Haiti since 2004, including 1,266 Brazilians. Haiti has no real construction standards. November 2008: Following the collapse of a school in Petionville, the mayor of Port-au-Prince estimated about 60% of buildings were shoddily built and unsafe in normal circumstances. [Facts from foxnews] The earthquake in Haiti was devastating. But its very important that we can band together and raise awareness as well as support and money. What were going to do now is break into your partner groups and make posters to raise awareness. You can use the facts that we just read, as well as pictures that Ive printed out. MBA Program 9:10-9:15 Form a circle. Have a short word on today's topic, beauty. Beauty is something we think about all the time, whether we realize it or not. Why do we look at ourselves in the mirror to make sure we look okay? Beauty and self image is a part of our culture that over the years has developed into something less than beautiful. Pop culture has defined beauty for us and achieving this "perfect" look has become next to impossible. Here is the dictionary's definition of beauty: 1) The quality that gives pleasure to the mind or senses and is associated with such properties as harmony of form or color, excellence of artistry, truthfulness, and originality. 2) One that is beautiful, especially a beautiful woman. 3) A quality or feature that is most effective, gratifying, or telling: The beauty of the venture is that we stand to lose nothing. 4) An outstanding or conspicuous example: "Hammett's gun went off. The shot was a beauty, just slightly behind the eyes" (Lillian Hellman). How many of us actually think of these definitions when I say the word "beautiful"? Most of us think back to what we have been taught. We think of Sleeping Beauty's flowing blonde locks, or Snow White's perfect skin and red lips, or supermodels' perfect bodies. We will now take a moment to write down what we each think makes you beautiful. 9:15-9:25- Finish up any last thoughts. Mix papers and hand them around. Highlight how many things we found "beautiful" to be physically oriented. Watch Disney clip. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXvABFfXwU0&feature=related After watching the clip, talk about the definition of beauty given to us through Disney and Pop Culture. Especially as small children. Discuss why this standard for beauty is unachievable because that isn't what beauty is all about. 9:25-9:30- Discuss non-physical things that make a person beautiful. An adorable definition I found on urbandictionary: Your smile makes you pretty, Your body makes you sexy, Only your mind makes you beautiful. If your mind is what makes a person beautiful, what are some real qualities of beauty? Make a new definition of beauty and write it down. 9:30-10:00-Finish up the topic of self image and how pop culture is damaging girls' MBA by giving them unrealistic definitions of beauty that are stressed just about everywhere. (Maybe a few words on the "skinny craze".) Beauty can be found in every single person. Every person is so unique, quirky, and interesting that absolutely everyone is beautiful. The way we present ourselves to people is the way we are viewed. You don't have to look like Christina Aguilera for people to think you are beautiful. Because inner beauty, what's inside, is what will always show through. 1) Write why we are beautiful on Disney Paper 2) Highlight how many of our Beautiful attributes our physical and share how many are physical out of how many we wrote 3) Watch Disney Clip 4) Discuss definition of Beauty that is given through The Little Mermaid, Disney, and Pop Culture. Especially to little kids. 5) Discuss non-physical things that make a person beautiful 6) Write why we are beautiful with our new definition [Program is being written by Shelley, Ill have it soon. Outline is above.] Finger Painting Fish come in hundreds of thousands of different colors. While some are icky and blue-black, others are beautiful with deep shades of reds and blues. What were going to do now is get back into our partner groups and draw pictures that we think look/represent our partners. It can be anything from a picture perfect picture, or hearts and flowers and a squirrel because that is what you reminds you of them. The trick, you can only use fingerpaints. Letter Writing Throughout the Night, youve had the opportunity to get to know an awesome Jewish Teen. Now its your opportunity to write a letter to your partner. Talk about why youre glad you got to know them, and why you think they are nice and Beautiful. Water Conservation Program Within the past twenty years the world has been hyped up on this whole issue of Global Warming and Going Green. A lot of aspects of being green have been tried to death. However, many important causes have been left at the waist side. Water Conservation is an important issue in our society. Afterall, how could we be under the sea if there was not enough water? What do you think of Water Conservation? Why is it important? [Keep the Discussion Going, throwing out facts every so often] Facts to have, not to read Less than 2% of the Earths water supply is fresh water. Of all the earth's water, 97% is salt water found in oceans and seas. Only 1% of the earth's water is available for drinking water. Two percent is frozen. The human body is about 75% water. A person can survive about a month without food, but only 5 to 7 days without water. Every day in the United States, we drink about 110 million gallons of water. Landscaping accounts for about half the water Californians use at home. Showers account for another 18 percent, while toilets use about 20 percent. The average American uses 140-170 gallons of water per day. If every household in America had a faucet that dripped once each second, 928 million gallons of water a day would leak away. It takes 3.3 acre feet of water to grow enough food for an average family for a year. A leaky faucet can waste 100 gallons a day. One flush of the toilet uses 6 gallons of water. An average bath requires 37 gallons of water. An average family of four uses 881 gallons of water per week just by flushing the toilet. The average 5-minute shower takes 15-25 gallons of water--around 40 gallons are used in 10 minutes. What are things that we can do to help? There are a lot of faucets that can have a lower pressure, and same with toilets. Dont keep the water running continuously while brushing your teeth, shaving, and washing your hands. Keep the idea of scattered showers in mind. Only keep running water while washing your hair and body. Some say peeing in the shower saves water and TP. Im not a fan, but whatever works for you. Only run the dishes with a full load. Rain Barrels. Wash your clothing only with a full load. Dont water excessively. Saving waters great and all but, most of those things are really complicated, right? Annnnt. Theres SO much you can do. I really cant stress this enough. But on a small scale, use the same water glass for everything. Use it for juice when you get home from school, tea in the afternoon, soda at dinner, milk before you sleep. You name it. Only wash it when its dirty, and you can keep putting in water etc. Nooow, were going to make our own glasses or mugs.
